While walking near a river in Japan, I found several large carp swimming some distance away from the riverbank.

Rather than moving closer to the fish, I used the FinePix F900EXR's optical zoom to photograph them from where I was standing.

What the 20× Optical Zoom Can Do

The main advantage of the F900EXR's zoom is the ability to photograph subjects that would otherwise appear relatively small in the frame.

In these photographs, the carp were swimming away from the riverbank.

Using the optical zoom made it possible to bring the fish much closer in the composition without physically approaching them.

This type of reach can be useful for subjects such as:

• Animals and birds

• Details on buildings

• Distant scenery

• Subjects across rivers or ponds

• Travel photography

• Outdoor events

A long optical zoom is especially useful when moving closer to the subject is difficult or impossible.

Photographing Moving Subjects at a Distance

The carp were continuously moving, while the surface of the river also contained reflections and changing light.

This is different from simply taking a wider photograph and enlarging a small section afterward.

For travel and everyday outdoor photography, this gives the F900EXR considerable flexibility in a compact body.

Things to Keep in Mind at Maximum Zoom

Using a long zoom range also introduces some challenges.

At higher magnification:

• Camera shake becomes easier to notice

• Moving subjects can be harder to keep in the frame

• Autofocus may have more difficulty in challenging conditions

• Haze and atmospheric conditions can affect distant subjects

• Strong reflections can reduce contrast

For the best results, hold the camera steadily and give the autofocus time to lock onto the subject before taking the photograph.

Whenever possible, using a railing, wall, or other stable surface for support can also help.
